When applying Durabak 18 non-slip, a spray gun that we recommend is the Dominion Sure Seal LTD, BUPA with a 3/8" nozzle. We recommend that you use about 55 lbs. of pressure, and spray from a distance of 18'' to 24". You can usually purchase this spray gun at Auto Zone. The rubber crumbs used in the Durabak 18 are approximately 500 microns (or 40 mesh).

SPRAY Equipment Information for Durabak or Durabak 18 Smooth applications

 The smooth Durabak (aromatic version) or Durabak 18 (aliphatic version) will mechanically bond to almost any clean, dry surface that has a surface porosity of 425 or greater or a surface profile of 220 grit sand paper or better, so bonding to unsealed concrete, non-oiled woods, most plastics and steel.  Where needed primers can be used to increase the bonding of the Durabak smooth materials to almost any surfaces.

 Advantages of these materials are: 

-One-Part urethane; Just requires mixing the materials in the can before using them.

-Stays Flexible: This material is the only material that has passed the -65 cold radius bend test.

-Repairable: If need be, the material can be repaired and will chemically bond to itself, no cold joint issues.

-Protection: Water resistant to 15 inches of water column, Resistant to acid and other chemicals, salt water, and Durabak 18 has high UV resistance.

-Fast Drying: On a 70 degree F day, and 30% humidity, you can expect to recoat in 45-60 minutes. Foot traffic is okay in 6 to 12 hours. Car traffic is okay in 48 to 72 hours, air and substrate temperature will vary these drying and curing times.

-Economical: If the material gets damaged, it is repairable, one coat at 15 wet mils can handle normal foot traffic for up to 5 years. Then you can recoat and get at least 7-10 more years. Commercial or industrial applications require 2 coats at 15 wet mils and any radial turning corner will require 3 coats at 15 wet mils to get 7-12 years of wear and tear, but recoats are easy to do and will double the life of the product. However, most times recoats are not necessary to refresh a floor's looks.

These materials should be applied with rollers, brushes, or airless equipment. For small projects (less than 1000 sq ft), rollers and brushes work well.  For cars, boats, truck beds or large truck enclosures, spraying is good if the applicator is set up for it, otherwise use rollers and brushes. Spraying equipment can be as small or large as the project requires and environmental concerns will allow. It is best to use a oil/water filter on your air supply.  Make sure that all o-rings can withstand the solvent xylene.  Use xylene to clean or thin material.  Do not use MEK, toluene, or acetone because they will destroy the Durabak urethane. It is best to use an airless sprayer, but many projects have been done with a simple can sprayer. It is best to use airless spray cans; If a normal air gun is used, thin even applications to avoid air bubbles in the coating (honey combing). 

 The viscosity of the Durabak or Durabak 18 material is like a thick latex. On a vertical surface do not apply thicker than 10 to 12 wet mils or it will start to sag on the substrate. On a horizontal surface it is best to keep each layer at 12 to 15 wet mils.  Areas that are an application of 8 wet mils or less may take a long time to dry out; it is usually best to put a thin coat over areas that do not get dry in 45 to 60 minutes at 70 degrees F. If the application temperature is less than 65 degrees or greater than 80 degrees F, the drying time will be greater than 45 to 60 minutes. Always look at your substrate temperatures, because they can cause longer drying times as well. DURABAK™ can be sprayed using a simple airless gun, a hopper gun, or professional spray equipment. Make sure to thoroughly mix DURABAK™. A drill with a mixing adapter works best. DURABAK™ should flow through the spray gun easily and can be thinned with xylene.

1. Any standard airless gun will work, attached to a compressor.

• Attach spray gun to compressor air line with oil/water filter to supply line. The application pressure needs to be set based on the gun, tip size, spray pattern, usually somewhere between 65 to 125 PSI on small equipment and 125 to 1500 PSI on larger equipment for large projects.

2. Use a conventional spray gun, such as GrayCo, Binks gun, with the following specifications, the nozzle size and fluid needle will vary on guns and equipment volume size, but a heavy needle spring; 2-28 teflon fluid packing; 1/2” I.D. (#71-283) fluid hose with 3/8” connectors (#72-1333), and 3/8” I.D. air line with 1/4” connectors (#71-1355) is standard sizing.

• To remove contaminants from the air line, use Oil & Water extractors mounted at the pressure tank.

3. Sears Craftsman No. 15524 (or De Vilbiss AS 300) with external mix nozzle. Requires 7 CFM. Use compressor with 9 CFM at 50 psi. 4. Airless spraygun: Graco Bulldog 33:1 with air intake pressure = 6-7 bar (90- 100psi). Outlet pressure = 100 bar (+/- 3000 psi). Tip: 0.039 ins (ie 35-39 thou). Delivery rate: 2.9 Gallons per minute.

5. For smooth DURABAK™, Graco Bulldog 33:1 with 21-23 thou. tip.

• Use a respirator with chemical absorbing cartridges, such as Binks #40-128.
• Before starting the job, spray a few short bursts onto a piece of cardboard or sheet of plywood or metal and away from the surface of the substrate. To test that everything is working properly, and that your pattern and spray distance is correct.

• If DURABAK™ does not spray easily and evenly, thin with Xylene.
• Spray an even coat over the entire surface to be covered. Be careful not to apply coat too thickly.

• When surface becomes tacky -- between 20 minutes and one hour, depending on weather conditions --- spray second coat. Extreme climactic conditions of heat, humidity and cold can shorten or lengthen this period.

IMPORTANT ADVICE!

• Remove any over-spray immediately with Xylene. Once cured, DURABAK™ is very difficult to remove.

• Solvents released when spraying are flammable. Observe all fire precautions. Proper ventilation is required.

• Clean spray gun between coats and immediately after job is completed. Use only Xylene.
